Linocut relief printing–otherwise known as linoleum block printing–has been an exciting printmaking technique since the mid-1800s when the material was invented. It was later adopted by artists like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Catlett and Emmy Lou Packard in the early-to-mid 20th century who pushed the medium to new heights. John P. Edwards, who studied printmaking at Macalester College and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), now brings this specialized method of printmaking to the Jamestown Arts Center. Participants in this 5-week course will learn to transfer image designs to linoleum blocks, to safely carve the blocks, and to register and print them on a variety of suitable papers. Using these skills, students will have the opportunity to create a small edition of identical prints. The JAC will provide linoleum blocks, inks, paper and basic carving tools. If you are inspired, we suggest that you invest in your own sharp tools (Flexcut or Speedball, for instance) for carving so that you can continue to work in between sessions in your home studio practice. Come to the first session with an image or idea for a high-contrast design that is up to 6”x 8” and get ready to fall in love with the magic of printmaking.

Instructor’s Bio: After a storied career as the Director of the Willett Free Library in Saunderstown, RI, John P Edwards has returned to his artistic roots as a printmaker and artist. As a young man, John studied printmaking from Macalester College and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and now brings his wealth of literary knowledge to his artistic practice, as well as newer explorations in a variety of mediums such as painting and drawing to create bold and beautiful works of art.

Unlimited access to the Printmaking Studio during Open Studio Hours is included for the duration of the session.
