This four-session workshop will give intermediate to advanced level ceramic artists the opportunity to explore new surfaces and firing techniques for their ceramic forms through the process of pit firing. The first three class sessions will meet in the JAC Ceramics Studio, where students will look at finished examples and create original works for the firing. Demonstrations will be given of various wheel thrown and hand built forms. The preparation and application of terra sigilata and the techniques of burnishing wares will be covered in the workshop. Students will have the opportunity to complete and decorate their pieces, which will be bisque fired and ready for the pit firing at Windmist Farms during the fourth class session. Weather depending, students will gather the following day (or the day after) to unearth their work together.
